Literary Information Centre

The ICL Literary Information Centre was established in the first half of the 1990s from the Library, the Old Czech Archive and a small team of bibliographers, with the aim of progressively creating a centre for the comprehensive provision of literary information. The Centre is not only used by Institute staff, but also by interested parties from outside the Institute, of whom there have recently been more than 3500. In addition to collecting and processing documents and providing information services, the Centre also devotes particular attention at all its divisions (Library, Bibliography, Archive) to converting documents to digital format and to progressively integrating them on new media.

Library

The ICL Library is the only library in the Czech Republic to specialize in Czech literature. It has been systematically built up ever since 1949 and the preserved collections from the former Department of Western Literatures and the Department for the Study of Czech Theatre were added to the Czech Studies Library in 1992. The entire ICL library collection now boasts almost 130,000 volumes, of which the Czech Studies section has some 78,000 titles, the World Literature section has 40,000 and the Theatrical Literature section has 12,000. Structurally, the library is made up of three collection units: fiction, non-fiction and journals. Czech fiction mostly comprises first editions by Czech authors. Other editions are only added if they are of key importance or in the case of collected or selected writings. The non-fiction collection includes literary-historical, theoretical and textological works, monographs on authors, works of world literature of primary importance, reference works (e.g. literary dictionaries, universal and specialist encyclopedias, language dictionaries and bibliographical catalogues) and key works on the social sciences, such as aesthetics, philosophy, history, sociology, art, theatre, film, music, linguistics, psychology, ethnography, religion, topography and so forth. The journal collection brings together various Czech literary, literary-studies, cultural and social journals (and selectively, foreign journals of the same type) and journals from associated disciplines such as philosophy, aesthetics, linguistics, history, sociology and so forth. The Western Literature Library collection has particularly seen the acquisition of works of a literary-historical and theoretical nature, original fiction and literary journals. The book and journal collection of the Theatre Library specializes in theoretical literature on the study of the Czech theatre, the texts of theatre plays and journals from this field.

Catalogues

A large part of the library collection is still only accessible by means of card indexes (of names and subjects), but the Czech Studies library journals catalogue and the book acquisitions since 2001 have been processed in the publicly available Tseries (Tinlib) Database. The entire card index has been transferred on an ongoing basis to the database since 2004.

Bibliography of Czech Literary Studies

The literary studies bibliography records all modern-period Czech literature, from the early National Revival to the present day, in several associated collections.

The 1770-1945 (1948) period is covered by a bibliographical index containing approximately two million annotated records from literary and cultural journals published in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia in Czech and German (approximately 500 periodical and collection titles). Excerpts contain both responses to Czech literary production for the given period and primary works (journal contributions from authors and translators), reviews of foreign literature, references to photographs and illustrations of Czech writers in the press, subject (i.e. non-personal) references and contributions published under pseudonyms and the initials of unidentified authors. The factual section of the retrospective bibliography (with more than 90,000 records) has been transcribed into the bibliographical database and made available within the framework of the ICL online bibliographical database.

The period from 1945 to the present has for the most part been made available in digital format on the web. The excerpt base for this annotated bibliography comprises literary studies and literary criticism publications (original and translated), specialist literature from other social sciences disciplines relating to literary issues, forewards and postscripts from works of Czech fiction, anthologies and collections of papers (from conferences and institutes of higher education and/or relating to national history and geography), specialized literary journals, general cultural and social-science-related journals and dailies: the 1945-1980 period comprises Czech literary studies / Czech studies bibliographical annual reports in book form; from 1981 to the present, the literary studies bibliography has only been processed in the databases. Records from 1945-1980 have progressively been transcribed into the database and by the end of 2004 the 1964-1980 period had been transferred.

Biographical Archive

The biographical archive comprises a collection of biographical documents on Czech literary figures and has been compiled at the ICL from the 1960s as part of lexicographical work. It contains cuttings and biographical material (questionnaires, correspondence and so forth). Since 1990 it has been progressively suupplemented by excerpts and the data have been verified. On this basis a biographical database of Czech literary figures has been compiled, providing basic biographical data, pseudonyms, initials and areas of activity. This database has been prepared for publication within the framework of a grant-aided project (2004-2008).

Old Czech Collection

The Old Czech Collection comprises a set of microfilms and photocopies of old Czech manuscripts and prints from Czech and foreign collections (with more than 163,000 fields of microfilm and more than 155,000 photocopies). Since the mid-1990s, it has been maintained and used as an (often unique) source of study for Institute tasks and for external researchers including those from abroad.

Brno Branch Library

The ICL Brno Branch Library includes publications on the history of Czech literature, original Czech prose and poetry (with particular emphasis on titles of Moravian origin), and it collects works on narrative theory. Since the 1950s, articles on Czech literature in domestic periodicals have been collected in the extensive cuttings archive. The library catalogue is currently being digitized and gradually being made available in the ASCR ICL collective catalogue: tinweb.ucl.cas.cz; books housed in Brno are given a shelf number starting with the letters BR, and the complete catalogue can be viewed in index form at the Brno branch. The collections are available to the specialist public and students by appointment on 543 211 868, or by e-mail at .
